1.1 A) Whole Number
1.1 A) Whole Number
Each digit in a number has a place value. Sometimes in the exam you may be given a number in words and asked to write it out as a number (or the opposite; you may be given a number in number form and asked to write it out in word form). In order to do this, you must remember the place value order and I have given this below.
Let’s have a few examples.
Example 1
Write the number thirty-four thousand, nine hundred and fifty-six down as a number.
To write this as a number we are going to be writing the values in the correct locations in the table above. It is best to start from the left (largest place value) and work your way down. The word number in the question starts with thirty-four thousand, which means that we have 3 ten thousands and 4 thousands. Therefore, we place a 3 in the ten thousands column and a 4 in the thousands column. The word number then goes on to say that there are nine hundreds, which means that a 9 goes in the hundreds column. The final part of the word number is fifty-six, which means that there are 5 tens and 6 units.

Therefore, the word number written as a number is 34,956.
Example 2
What is 924,645 written in words?
To find what this number is written in words, we need to work out what the place values for each of the numbers in the number represent. A good way of finding out what the number is in words, is to write the number into the table. When we are writing the number in the table, it is best to start off with the units.

It is much easier to write the number in words now that we have the table. When we are writing the numbers in words, we always start from the highest place value and we group the hundreds of thousands, tens of thousands and thousands together, and group the hundreds, tens and units together.
Therefore, 924,645 written in words is nine hundred and twenty-four thousand, six hundred and forty-five.
Therefore, 924,645 written in words is nine hundred and twenty-four thousand, six hundred and forty-five.
Using Commas
You will probably find that it is easier to place commas after every 3 digits from the right to break the number up. This is fine to do, but you need to make sure that you do not make the commas too big that they start to look like 1’s as this would completely change the number. Also, you will probably find that the commas may not be particularly useful when you are carrying out operations with numbers, such as adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.
