6.4 Ordering Standard Form
In the exam, you may be asked to order a set of numbers that are in standard form. You would order numbers that are in standard by starting with the highest power of 10’s. If there were two or more numbers that had the same power of 10, you would use A (the number at the front) to determine which of the numbers was the biggest.
For example, place the following numbers in order.
For example, place the following numbers in order.
We would first look at the powers of 10 and order them according to the highest power of 10 to the lowest power of 10. If any of the numbers are raised to the same power of 10, we would order them according to what the value of their A is. We notice that 3.4 x 108 and 5.4 x 108 both have the same power of 10 (108). By looking at the values for A we see that 5.4 x 108 is greater than 3.4 x 108.
