1.8 B) Hourly Wages – Part 2
1.8 B) Hourly Wages – Part 2
In the previous section, we were given the number of hours worked and the hourly wage and asked to work out how much I would get paid. The formula for working out how much I would get paid is given below.
In this section, we are going to be working backwards. We are going to be given the amount of money that an individual gets for working a given number of hours and we will be asked how much the individual gets paid per hour.
Example 1
An individual gets paid weekly. One week she works 28 hours and receives a wage of £184.24. How much does she get paid per hour?
We are going to be using the formula from the start to answer this question. But, before we use the formula, we are going to rearrange it because we want to find the hourly wage rather than the total amount that our individual earnt (wages). Currently the formula is:
An individual gets paid weekly. One week she works 28 hours and receives a wage of £184.24. How much does she get paid per hour?
We are going to be using the formula from the start to answer this question. But, before we use the formula, we are going to rearrange it because we want to find the hourly wage rather than the total amount that our individual earnt (wages). Currently the formula is:
As we are wanting to find the hourly wage, we need to make hourly wage the subject. We do this by dividing both sides of the equation by hours worked.
We can now sub in £184.24 for the wages and 28 for the hours worked.
Therefore, the hourly wage for our individual is £6.58.
Example 2
An individual gets paid £340.10 for working 38 hours. How much would they get paid for working 6 hours?
The first step in answering this question is to work out the hourly wage. After we have found the hourly wage, we are then able to work out how much the individual earns for working for 6 hours.
We are able to work out the hourly wage by using the rearranged formula that we used in the previous question. The formula is given below:
An individual gets paid £340.10 for working 38 hours. How much would they get paid for working 6 hours?
The first step in answering this question is to work out the hourly wage. After we have found the hourly wage, we are then able to work out how much the individual earns for working for 6 hours.
We are able to work out the hourly wage by using the rearranged formula that we used in the previous question. The formula is given below:
We are now able to sub the values that we are given from the question into this formula; the wages are £340.10, and the hours worked is 38.
From the above calculation, we can see that the hourly wage is £8.95. We are now able to work out the amount of money that the individual gets for working for 6 hours. We are able to do this by using the formula at the start of this section and subbing in 6 for the hours worked and £8.95 for the hourly wage.
The individual gets paid £53.70 for working for 6 hours.
