B2: Quiz 8 – Answers
1) The two circulatory systems are:
  • From the heart to the lungs and back to the heart (pulmonary system)
  • From the heart to the rest of the body and back to the heart (systemic system)

2) The 3 different parts are:
  1. Heart – the pump of the system
  2. Blood vessels – carry blood around the body
  3. Blood – the transport medium

3)
a) Oxygenated blood is blood that contains lots of oxygen and very little carbon dioxide
b) Deoxygenated blood is blood that contains very little oxygen and lots of carbon dioxide

4)
a)
i) Oxygen diffuses from the lungs (alveoli) into the bloodstream
Carbon dioxide diffuses from the bloodstream into the lungs (alveoli)
ii) Oxygen diffuses from the bloodstream into body tissue (bicep)
Carbon dioxide diffuses from body tissue (bicep) into the bloodstream
b) Oxygenated blood is 2 & 3
Deoxygenated blood is 1 & 4

5) The one that goes from the heart to the rest of the body and back (the systemic system)

Questions
1) Mammals have a double circulatory system; say where blood travels on both of these circulatory systems.

2) What are the 3 different parts that make up the circulatory system? Give their role as well.

3)
a) What is oxygenated blood?
b) What is deoxygenated blood?

4) A very basic diagram of the circulatory system is shown below.
Picture
a)
i) Discuss the gas exchanges that take place in the lungs?
ii)  Discuss the gas exchanges that take place at tissue in the body (bicep).
b) Say whether blood is oxygenated or deoxygenated for the 4 numbers on the above diagram.

5) Which circulatory system has the greatest blood pressure; is it the one that goes from the heart to the lungs and back, or the one that goes from the heart to the rest of the body and back?
