B3: Quiz 3 – Answers
1) When the infected individual sneezes without covering their mouth, tiny droplets of water containing coronavirus (pathogen) will enter the air. These droplets containing coronavirus (pathogen) may then be breathed in by another individual, which results in them becoming infected with coronavirus (pathogen)
2)
a) Cholera is usually spread through dirty/ contaminated water sources that individuals drink
b) Bacterium
Cholera leads to diarrhoea, which causes dehydration
3) An individual that is infected with coronavirus would cough or sneeze onto their hands, which results in their hands having some coronavirus on them. When they touch a door handle with their hands, some of the coronavirus pathogen will get transferred from their hands to the door handle. Another individual who currently does not have coronavirus will touch the door handle, which will transfer some of the coronavirus pathogen from the door handle onto the individual’s hand. If they then place their hands into their mouth, they will transfer the coronavirus pathogen inside of them, which can result in them becoming infected with coronavirus
4) Bodily fluids – blood, fluids during sexual intercourse (semen) and breast milk
5) Any 3 from:

4) Bodily fluids – blood, fluids during sexual intercourse (semen) and breast milk
5) Any 3 from:
- Being hygienic – washing our hands regularly to get rid of any pathogens that are on them. We can also catch a sneeze/ cough in a tissue
- Use new equipment such as needles for procedures – new equipment will contain no pathogens whereas old equipment might. For example, an old needle may contain HIV
- Isolating infected individuals – this reduces the number of contacts between infected individuals and other individuals which reduces the spread/ prevents the infected individual passing on the disease (think self-isolation for coronavirus when you have tested positive for the disease)
- Destroying the vectors – killing the organisms that are spreading the pathogen
- Vaccination – gives the individual protection against the communicable disease and benefits society as the disease will be less prolific which reduces the chances of members of society catching the disease
Questions
1) An individual is infected with coronavirus. Explain how this individual sneezing on a train without covering their mouth can cause other individuals to become infected with coronavirus.
2)
a) What is the most common way that cholera is spread?
b) Is cholera a bacterium, virus, parasite or fungi?
c) What are the effects of cholera?
3) Pathogens can be spread through contact. Use a door handle to explain how an individual could become infected with coronavirus.
4) There are four main ways how pathogens can be spread. Three of them are water, air and contact. What is the fourth? Give an example as well.
5) Give 3 different ways that we can reduce the spread of communicable diseases. If you want to, give a small definition of the ways as well.
